The role of government is to provide for the common good. This includes protecting the vulnerable, and ensuring equal rights, equal opportunity, equal protection and access to essential services. Essential services include education, health care, social services, environmental protection, transportation, and public safety.
I favor progressive taxes and focusing on prevention and early intervention rather than waiting for a crisis.
Government must also regulate the private sector as needed to ensure competition and transparency so consumers can make informed buying decisions. When government contracts with the private sector to provide essential services, government must serve as the informed consumer on behalf of the taxpayer.
